Hi everyone! I'm new here and I hope I'm posting this in the right place. It's been really neat to read all these posts and find out what happened to some of the people in the books. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Minnie? I've read about what happened to Laura's other friends but found nothing on Minnie. Just curious! Thanks!
Minnie Johnson's life really seems to be a mystery... Well, I have few information of where she came from - among them useless titbits like that her father erected the first brick-building in the village where the Johnson-family lived in Wisconsin, but I have plainly nothing about Minnie's whereabouts after 1883.

Thanks Roberta. I was wondering about her. No matter how much I researched I couldn't find anything about her. I was excited to learn that Mary Power ended up in Bellingham, Wa. That's only a couple hours away from me.
The photo and the census seem to prove that Minnie was a contemporary of Carrie's and not Laura's. That still doesn't explain the lack of information about her... I wonder why Laura included her in her group of friends? Was there someone else who was, but she couldn't remember her name? I also think it's sad that Carrie is wearing the same dress in both photos. Surely they knew they were going to get their photo taken both times? I know life was different back then, but with photos so rare, you'd think Carrie and/or Ma would have remembered that she'd already worn the dress once!

Perhaps this was the very reason why Carrie wore the same dress twice. It doesn't look like an every-day-dress, and one could assume that at a special occasion like having her photo taken she would have worn pretty clothes, perhaps her second best dress if not her best (like Laura did when the family photo was taken in the 1890s). These better clothes had to serve longer than every-day-dresses and after all, there was only one year between both photos. I can't think of Ma making a new best or second best dress for Carrie only for having her photo taken (again) when her good dress was still pretty fine.
Roberta, I see your point of reasoning, but it seems Laura got one or two new "dressy" dresses a year in THGY. You would think Carrie could have got at least one new dress for the occasions! Mary was out of college by then, the Ingalls were living in town, and they had one less mouth to feed with Laura married and living on the Wilder tree claim. I know the Ingalls were never well-off, but you'd think times were a little easier for them by the late 1880s - at least enough to get Carrie a new dress, especially since 1888 should have been her last year of school...

I know Minnie was a real person, but do you think she is included because in real life it was really "Ginny"?! I know De Smet Nellie is based largely on Genevieve Masters... but here would be a way to introduce her in another way into the group. Just a thought?!?!
I've still kept up the search for anything related to Minnie, and still have no luck. I've found more records on some of her family members.. but nothing on her. Did she marry? Where did she move to? Kids? Did she teach too? Ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!
krose09 - interesting theory, but Genny/Ginny Masters and Laura did NOT get along at all in DeSmet. DeSmet's "Nellie Olseson" is mostly based on Genevieve masters, so I think "her" Minnie was perhaps someone else, but with photographs and such of Carrie with her, she "borrowed" the name.
